RECENT ADVANCES in medicine, science, and technology—and changes in the labor market itself-have opened new opportunities in the workplace for disabled Americans. People with once-debilitating illnesses or diseases can now return to work. Disabled people who previously had little hope of competing in the job market are earning college degrees and moving into professional jobs. People with mental retardation or certain forms of severe mental illness are finding their way into jobs in the service sector.
