A variety of policy changes in recent decades have created new pressures on doctors, and the profession appears to be feeling the strain. Nearly 80% of physicians report symptoms of burnout, and 62% are pessimistic about the future of medicine. This problem has not gotten enough attention in our health-care debates. When determining what is best for patients, the well-being of physicians matters too.
