ON July 14th, 1981, the city of San Jose, California and Local 101 of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) ended the country’s first municipal strike over the issue of equal pay for comparable worth (in contrast to equal pay for equal work) by agreeing to a $5.4 million, two-year contract that is intended to narrow the salary gap between men and women workers.
