The cost of housing

THE two quotations above illustrate the widely held belief that more and more Americans are being priced out of the housing market. This belief is by no means limited to radical critics of the American economic system---Ashley is a ranking Democratic member of the House Banking Committee (the committee responsible for housing legislation), while Brozen has done work for the conservative American Enterprise Institute. The idea of housing becoming more dear is a commonplace in discussions of urban affairs.  Happily, this notion is quite incorrect.
