QUEEN VICTORIA, it is said, was so taken with Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland that she asked Lewis Carroll to send her a selection of his other works. When he complied, however, Victoria was not grateful. For “Lewis Carroll” was the pseudonym of the Oxford mathematician C. L. Dodgson, and the books that he mischievously chose for his monarch were all treatises on mathematics.
