WHEN one of the characters in Oscar Wildes play, Lady Windemere’s Fan, says, “I Couldn’t help it. I can resist everything except temptation,” the playwright was kidding. He was implying, slyly, that those who fail to resist temptation prefer what they perceive as pleasant to what is moral.
