MY BOOK that can receive a fly-leaf endorsement from both George Gilder and Mario Cuomo can t be ignored. And Professor Reich s latest effort to examine Americas “collective vision” of itself certainly should not be. For this is a highly provocative and brilliantly written book. Its fluent prose is, however, a danger as well as a virtue— a virtue because it makes for entertaining reading, a danger because it is the spoonful of sugar that makes this particular medicine go down, without the reader being fully aware of the hazardous side effects it might have.
