FOR the past three years, while the unemployment rate has soared from 3.5 to six per cent and stubbornly refuses to decline significantly, the role of women in the economy has received special attention. The spectacular rise in the number of women who have joined the labor force has been singled out as an important structural change in the supply of labor-a change which explains, or helps to explain away, the existence of large numbers of people without jobs.
