Misery Needs Company: Contextualizing the Geographic and Temporal Link between Unemployment and Suicide

Abstract:
Despite long-standing evidence linking higher unemployment rates to increased suicide rates, a puzzling trend emerged in the United States after the Great Recession: suicide rates continued to rise even as unemployment rates declined. Drawing on theories of social networks and reference groups, we advance the concept of “sameness” -- in this case, the extent to which an individual’s employment status aligns with the fate of others in one’s community -- to clarify how unemployment rates influence suicide. Constructing a multilevel dataset of U.S. suicide deaths from 2005 to 2017, we find that while unemployed individuals face a higher risk of suicide compared to the employed, this gap diminishes in communities with high local unemployment rates. Moreover, the “sameness” effect extends beyond geographic contexts to temporal ones, as national unemployment spikes reduce suicide risk among the unemployed and diminish the importance of local sameness. Together, these findings suggest a mechanism of “situational awareness,” whereby local and national economic contexts shape the meaning of unemployment, shifting its interpretation from personal failure to system failure and reducing its stigma. Our article offers a novel framework for examining the effects of cross-level interactions in suicide research, highlighting the crucial role of culture as deeply intertwined with social network mechanisms in shaping contextual influence.


Employment shocks and demand for pain medication: Understanding the channels that drive opioid use

Abstract:
Higher employment ratios can affect opioid use through two main channels: by increasing physical pain from working or by reducing mental distress that may contribute to substance misuse. To separate these channels, I contrast the effect of labor demand shocks on the use of opioids with the effect on the use of over-the-counter painkillers—commonly used to treat pain but not mental distress. I find that during local economic expansions, opioid use declines while the demand for over-the-counter pain relief medication increases. Employment changes in high injury industries accentuate this pattern. One possible explanation is that, during local economic expansions, the use of pain medications to manage work injuries increases while the misuse of opioids decreases.


Adipose tissue retains an epigenetic memory of obesity after weight loss

Abstract:
Reducing body weight to improve metabolic health and related comorbidities is a primary goal in treating obesity. However, maintaining weight loss is a considerable challenge, especially as the body seems to retain an obesogenic memory that defends against body weight changes. Overcoming this barrier for long-term treatment success is difficult because the molecular mechanisms underpinning this phenomenon remain largely unknown. Here, by using single-nucleus RNA sequencing, we show that both human and mouse adipose tissues retain cellular transcriptional changes after appreciable weight loss. Furthermore, we find persistent obesity-induced alterations in the epigenome of mouse adipocytes that negatively affect their function and response to metabolic stimuli. Mice carrying this obesogenic memory show accelerated rebound weight gain, and the epigenetic memory can explain future transcriptional deregulation in adipocytes in response to further high-fat diet feeding. In summary, our findings indicate the existence of an obesogenic memory, largely on the basis of stable epigenetic changes, in mouse adipocytes and probably other cell types. These changes seem to prime cells for pathological responses in an obesogenic environment, contributing to the problematic ‘yo-yo’ effect often seen with dieting. Targeting these changes in the future could improve long-term weight management and health outcomes.

Abstract:
A paradigm for biology is emerging in which cells can be genetically programmed to write their histories into their own genomes. These records can subsequently be read, and the cellular histories reconstructed, which for each cell could include a record of its lineage relationships, extrinsic influences, internal states and physical locations, over time. DNA recording has the potential to transform the way that we study developmental and disease processes. Recent advances in genome engineering are driving the development of systems for DNA recording, and meanwhile single-cell and spatial omics technologies increasingly enable the recovery of the recorded information. Combined with advances in computational and phylogenetic inference algorithms, the DNA recording paradigm is beginning to bear fruit. In this Perspective, we explore the rationale and technical basis of DNA recording, what aspects of cellular biology might be recorded and how, and the types of discovery that we anticipate this paradigm will enable.


Consumption responses to sweetened beverage taxes by household income in four U.S. cities

Abstract:
Taxes on sweetened beverages have become an important policy response to growing obesity rates and the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in the U.S. and other nations. Since 2015, eight U.S. cities have implemented these taxes, but so far direct evidence of their impacts on household purchasing behavior is scarce. Of particular interest to many researchers and policy makers is the response of lower-income consumers to these taxes, both because they have higher sweetened beverage consumption on average and because of concerns that sweetened beverage taxes are regressive. This project investigates the income-stratified household response to SSB taxes using a data set containing the purchasing behavior of approximately 400 households in the cities of Seattle, San Francisco, Oakland, and Philadelphia, all of which have recently introduced beverage taxes. Using doubly-robust estimation of dynamic and heterogeneous treatment effects relative to a propensity-matched set of households in three comparison cities, we find that households in taxed cities experience increased prices and reduce their purchases of those beverages, with no evidence of cross-border shopping. We further find differential tax impacts by income level, with lower-income households (households with income <200% of the federal poverty line for their size) reducing their purchases of taxed beverages by nearly 50% — more than double the 18% reduction found in higher-income households (households with income >400% of the federal poverty line for their size). Our finding that lower-income households decrease their consumption more than twice as much as higher-income households suggests that these taxes may reduce health disparities and promote population health.


Free Summer Programming and Body Mass Index Among Schoolchildren From Low-Income Households: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Design, Setting, and Participants: This randomized clinical trial was conducted during the summers of 2021, 2022, and 2023 in the southeastern United States. Participants were children (kindergarten through fourth grade) from predominantly low-income households who were randomized to attend an SDC [summer day camp] operated by a parks and recreation commission or continue summer as usual (control).

Results: A total of 422 children (mean [SD] age, 8.2 [1.5] years; 202 [48%] female, 220 [52%] male, 292 [69%] at or below 200% federal poverty level, 127 [30%] with food insecurity) were randomized to 1 of 2 conditions: summer as usual (control, n = 199) or free SDC (n = 223). Intent-to-treat analysis indicated mean (SE) change in zBMI at the end of the summer was 0.046 (0.027) for the control and −0.048 (0.025) for the intervention group, representing a significant between-group difference of −0.094 (95% CI, −0.166 to −0.022). Dose-response analyses indicated that every 1 day per week increase in attending an SDC resulted in a −0.034 to −0.018 zBMI reduction, which translates to a gain of 0.046 to 0.080 zBMI for children never attending summer programming vs −0.09 to −0.04 zBMI reduction for children attending summer programming every weekday.
